Rambla de Mar Lightweight Bridge, Barcelona, Spain

Rambla de Mar Lightweight Bridge and Sailing Boat in Barcelona, Spain

Witnessed by the anxious crowd gathering on the Rambla de Mar lightweight bridge close to Maremagnum shopping center, gently sails this boat, stopping time for some minutes and forcing visitors to enjoy the view longer than expected, till the mechanism in the bridge extends the wooden platform towards the pier on the other side. The bridge by Viaplana and Pinion leads to Las Ramblas nearby and was featured in Barcelona Photoblog in the past: Waiting for the Bridge at Rambla de Mar and Maremagnum Wooden Bridge in Rush Hours.

And just in case you would like to enjoy the same view daily here is list of Barcelona hotels near the port:

Remember this bridge is a project from Arenas y Asociados, built by FCC and considered according to the source, the largest bascule bridge in the world.

Waiting for the Bridge: Rambla de Mar, Barcelona

These people were waiting for the wooden decked swing bridge at Moll d'Espanya to close again after letting boats sail into the marina. The wooden platform and the path along the bridge towards Maremagnum, the big leisure center, is called Rambla de Mar. The bridge was designed by Albert Viaplana, professor of Architectural Project at the School of Architecture of Barcelona University and Helio Piñon, his partner, teaching at the school since 1970 and co-editor of Arquitecturas-bis since 1974. They are responsible for major projects in the city so I suggest you check their work here Viaplana & Piñon. Here is a Google Earth Map with a view of the bridge at Rambla de Mar and Maremagnum.

Iron Bridge Over Onyar River in Gerona, Spain

Iron Bridge Over Onyar River in Gerona, Spain
© All Rights Reserved

Remember the view from a bridge over River Onyar in Gerona, this was the old iron bridge where I was standing that day. As usual it seems weird that this photo blog travels to another city being a blog about Barcelona and neighbouring towns. I once said that as long as it was in Catalonia on the one hand and was good for Barcelona Photoblog interests on the other hand some exceptions could be made. So revisionists, critics, purists, friend or foe, here I go with my image of the bridge over the Onyar river, one of the four rivers surrounding the city of Girona, the ancient Gerunda, inhabited by Iberians, Romans, Visigoths, Moors, Jews and even the French.

Bascule Bridge La Porta d'Europa, Barcelona Port

La Porta de Europa Bridge in Barcelona Harbor
La Porta de Europa Bridge in Barcelona Harbor

La Porta d'Europa is a basculant mobile bridge at the entrance to the port of Barcelona by Juan Jose Arenas de Pablo, Profesor PhD. of Special Structures of Design at the University of Cantabria in Santander City.

Arenas is also known by other famous works like the The Bridge of the Barqueta (main entry of the EXPO-SEVILLA 92), The Bridge of HispanoAmerica in the city of Valladolid as well as The Cathedral of The Wines in Navarra.

The Porta d'Europa bridge insures traffic between island (due to increasing traffic volumes a new harbor entrance has been built and part of the port becomes an island) and mainland while retaining the existing harbor entrance.

State port authorities are incorporating private investment to enlarge the docks facilities, maximize maritime foreign trade of Catalonia and make Barcelona harbor a world class port that responds to Europe's increasing need for transport, distribution and logistic services.

If you want to see the bridge from this perspective take the Las Golondrinas sightseeing ships at Moll de la Fusta.

Bridge over Barcelona Forum Water

Bridge over Barcelona Forum Water

My Barcelona picture today goes about a bridge, in fact a small footbridge over the new sports harbour at the Barcelona Forum premises. Notice the odd irregular shape and take a look at the marina photo. Besides admiring the innovative design, don´t miss the benches on both sides where you can rest and let your mind fly looking at the sea.
