Street Artists in La Rambla, Barcelona: Human Statue

Street Artists in La Rambla, Barcelona: Human Statue - Vegetal Equilibrium [enlarge]

As I said yesterday I took some new pictures of street artists performing in La Rambla, Barcelona. Human statues that turn around and make funny faces, wink an eye, freak you out with a sudden movement or hold a ball on their fingertips while they elegantly pose for your camera as this man, dressed like a tree or some kind of deity, maybe trying to suggest a fruit and the equilibrium Mother Nature needs nowadays to survive.

Recommended: I would like to recommend Olivierdestroy whose artwork I came across today at Flickr. Some may like him, some others not so much but you won't remain indifferent. Note: requires to be logged in.

Human Statues in La Rambla de Barcelona: Biker

Human Statues in La Rambla de Barcelona: Biker

Human Statues in La Rambla de Barcelona really have an astonishing imagination. How do you dig a bearded man in a thick suit looking like Uncle Sam or ZZ Top, escorted by two skinny companions (two skeletons) that pedal along with him in unison?.

A lot has been said in Barcelona Photoblog about street artists, statues in La Rambla de Barcelona and their predominant role in broadcasting a good image of the city. I suggest you use the Google label below to search for more. Of course you can always visit my Street Artists photoset at Flickr. Better than that? Come to Barcelona for Easter and watch them live!

Human Statues at La Rambla: Hypnotic Cleopatra

Human Statues at La Rambla: Hypnotic Cleopatra

Las Ramblas of Barcelona, that multicolor promenade full of art nouveau architecture, museums, souvenir shops, hotels, people and even caged animals and flowers is also a big showcase for artists, street artists, talented and anonymous, who have given a new style to one of the main arteries in the city. Some try to regulate their activity or even ban it laying obstacles in the way.

I just can't imagine La Rambla without human statues like this Cleopatra enduring for hours in straining postures and under tons of makeup. Help art and do not strangle it. Save your laws for pickpockets and similar scoundrel procreating in Las Ramblas.

This serious captain rang the bell and steered the wheel at the beat of the coins falling on his can. With a stern look and full of tar he was chasing his own white whale accompanied by the chant of syrens in his ipod.

Ronaldinho Wears a Smile

Ronaldinho Wears a Smile

Today FC Barcelona plays against Recreativo de Huelva. After saying farewell to Champions League tournament, Barcelona's team is trying to stay on top of the charts but is followed closed by other fierce rivals such as Sevilla FC or Valencia. Ronaldinho is still the cornerstone of our team in spite of his ups and downs. A star like him well deserves all of our support so here goes this funny portrait of a human statue in Las Ramblas to honor the good humor and his "joga bonito" way of life.

Barri Gotic, Barcelona: Street Musicians Paradise?

Musician Playing Guitar at Barri Gotic

There is a story behind every anonymous artist performing in the narrow streets of Barri Gotic, the ideal place with all the ingredients to earn a decent sum to survive: solitude to perform, great acoustics, and lots of tourists with pockets full of money.

Many of these artists have a solid musical education and make the tour more pleasant, but according to local authorities some others don't. Recently, the Ajuntament (City Council) started a project to regulate their activities. Artists have been assigned 6 permanent spots in the Gothic Quarter where only Classical or Melodic music can be played.

The rest of genres are to be performed out of this area on 13 other spots. No percussion, no noise over the decibel map in the district. No space exclusivity for any of the artists either. Law breakers can be fined and backsliders' instruments shall be confiscated. Each of the artists can play 4 hours a day divided in sessions of 2.

These measures made neighbors happier and really have pissed musicians off!. Especially when you see illegal performers sneaking away from the police in the light of day in spite of cameras like the one in the picture. By this I don't mean anything against this man working perhaps according to regulations, I really enjoyed his performance anyway!

Barcelona Street Artists: Cleopatra in a Trance

Cleopatra street artist and living statue in Las Ramblas, Barcelona

You have seen her before on this site. This time I managed to come up closer to Cleopatra to take a good look at those bracelets, those rings and the pearl tiara with the lethal asp.

Apparently she is still in a trance induced by the dreadful bite although she is quite aware of the noise of those coins falling in a can at her feet.

As you can see she is sitting on a chair which is quite more comfortable than standing still like many of the human statues along Las Ramblas: wise girl indeed!

Street Artists at Work in Las Ramblas: Cleopatra

Cleopatra Human Statue with Tourist in Las Ramblas, Barcelona

With today's post I think my series about Las Ramblas street artists or living statues is over, at least for now. I leave you with these lovers from different epochs. The modern Romeo is a tourist of course and the queen is Cleopatra I suppose, judging by the scepter, bracelets or familiar tiara. For a small amount she would hold your hand and caress it with her cheeks, for quite a long time.

Ronaldinho Gaucho in Las Ramblas, Barcelona

Don't you leave Barcelona without posing next to Ronaldinho Gaucho, winner of so many awards with FC Barcelona, Brazilian soccer virtuoso, featured in so many TV spots, video games, and even in cartoons. Look at this lucky tourist side by side with her idol, isn't she plethoric?...Yes, I know, shame on me. How do I dare! Don't tell me there is no resemblance though. Sorry Ronnie, just joking. Care for a link, here it is Ronaldinho Gaucho Official Web Site. See this other picture of the artist impersonating Ronaldinho. It took him a lot to smile, wearing such big false teeth, but he was funny saluting the surfer's way.

Recomended: Search for Ronaldinho's Bio or anything related to him and Barcelona FC in my FCBarcelona swicki.

Now a different suggestion: Visit Digital Photography School, for tips and lessons.

Barcelona Living Statues: Scary Embrace

I know many people will take pictures similar to mine in Las Ramblas but I do not collect images of Barcelona street artists or living statues for the sake of art, but to share them with those of you who have not visited our city. I was lucky this time to be on the right spot for a fortunate combination: a beautiful girl in the hands of evil. By the way, is he some sort of Star Wars' Darth Maul in black and white sent by Sith forces. Wasn't he red?. Any help here? I chose another one, closer, so you could better appreciate the artist and the improvised model.

Street Artist at Las Ramblas, Barcelona: Equilibrium

Barcelona street artists are experts in disguising and improvisation. They will do just about anything, including levitation to squeeze a couple of bucks out of your pockets. The trick is self evident here but you have to accept that we wouldn't have thought of doing that. I like the expression of surprise in the face of that boy, tiptoeing backstage to determine whether the yogi is really floating on thin air or not.

To be examined: JPG Magazine- you post your best pictures there and in case you are published in the print edition, you win a yearly subscription and 100$. Important, you hold the copyright. Worth trying? Maybe I check that.

Living Statue at Las Ramblas, Barcelona: Devil's Work

I have seen the Devil at Las Ramblas, Barcelona, he wasn't wearing Prada though. Who says the Devil does not rest. One of Barcelona's most famous living statues and mysteriously ignored by my camera until now, was taking a break after a hard day's work. There was no smell of sulfur, like Chávez said of Bush, but it was terribly hot that day. Damn it!

Barcelona Living Statues: Cowboy

 Barcelona Living Statues: Cowboy

Today I resume my Street Artist or Living Statues series, with an updated picture of the Ramblas Cowboy, as I call it. This time using a larger size photograph, which suits him very well. This time it is a closer take from a lower angle.

Barcelona Street Artist: Living Statue

Street Artist at Las Ramblas de Barcelona: Living Statue

This Barcelona street artist, posing as a living statue is not giving the serious, stern, hardened by a thousand battles kind of look, oh no, he was really fed up with my pictures.

Minutes later and without previous warning, he turned his back on me and sat down for his lunch break. The irascible mood perfectly matches the character though.

As you know there are many living statues like this along Las Ramblas, and some of them have been captured in my previous posts and pictures.

Here is my list of Barcelona Street Artists: Living Statues for you to browse

Paper Sculpture on Subway Vent at Paseo de Gracia

Walking along Paseo de Gracia in Barcelona I discovered this man reading and totally unaware of the marvelous paper sculpture billowing over a subway vent just like Marilyn's skirt in Seven Year Itch. The artist, roll in hand, smiles with complicity.

Metal Art at La Rambla, Barcelona

    Metal Art at La Rambla

Wandering along Las Ramblas I found these rusty metallic objects obviously piled up there to be used by one of the many human statues, though this time I couldn't spot the artist. I particularly like this sort of metal Chucky with trumpet.

Street Artist XII at Las Ramblas Barcelona

Street Artist XII at Las Ramblas Barcelona

This Barcelona street artist is number XII in my particular series. Although you can't tell much what was it he wanted to represent, there is something about the light and the use of the lamp post as a prop, that gives the picture some sort of old classic touch (this is my personal opinion, of course).

Barcelona Street Artist: Las Ramblas Cowboy

    Barcelona Artists: Las Ramblas Cowboy

This picture was taken in March, as you can easily guess by the coats and jackets, but I felt the need to resume the street artist series. Let's see if I can go down to Las Ramblas soon and refresh my set

I guess this happens to many of us, that the most interesting places to shoot are downtown, sometimes quite out of your daily route to work. This year I am rediscovering Barcelona, I had never paid much attention to its history, I was missing that enthusiasm that only children or tourists show.
